How Does an EV Charging Station Work?
Electric vehicle charging stations operate by getting power from different sources and channelling it to the electric car's battery. Although plugs, outlets, and battery types may vary depending on the brand and model of the electric vehicle, they all generally rely on electrical energy stored in the fuel cells to power the motor, which drives the wheels.
There are three types of EV charging stations.
Level 1 Charging Station
A Level 1 charging station may be plugged into a typical 110-volt grounded wall socket and can charge at a rate of around 5 miles per hour without typically requiring an upgrade from your utility panel. If you have a short commute, you can charge your car for eight or more hours every night using this Level 1 ready-to-go option.
Level 2 Charging Station
Level 2 charging stations are faster than Level 1 chargers. They require a professionally installed 240-volt outlet on a dedicated circuit in order to charge your EV at a rate of 25 miles per hour.
If your vehicle has larger batteries that need more time to charge, Level 2 charging stations might be the best option. They are also the perfect option if you have a longer commute, prefer a faster charge, or want a greater electric driving range.
Level 3 Charging Station
The Level 3 charging stations are the quickest charging stations available today which can produce between 50 kW and 350 kW of power. Up to 298 miles of range may be achieved in an hour of charging at a 350 kW Level 3 charging station, and up to 173 miles at 50 kW.
